Instructor Bios
Ron Overton
Ron has over 25 years of professional training experience. He is the past president and a current board member of the Association of Crane and Rigging Professionals. He was a member of the NCCCO’s exam writing task force for Articulating Boom Cranes. Ron is considered an expert in Crane and Rigging regulations, laws, and standards. Ron is an NCCCO accredited practical examiner for Mobile, Tower, and Articulating Cranes.
Pat Brown
Pat worked with cranes, excavators, and various heavy equipment operations for many years. He began at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. While there he operated the largest crane of its type in the world! In his 17 years as a crane operator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers he made his heaviest pick of 400 Tons. Pat developed and taught the first curriculum for crane operators in the Navy and retired as a “Master Chief”. He came to join OST in 2000. Pat retired on August 12, 2011.

Rob Scherbarth
Rob has been training and developing various curriculum for safe lifting and equipment inspection since his time in the Navy. While in the Navy for 12 years, Rob achieved Master Training Specialist, Curriculum Developer and Command Trainer Assessment Team qualifications and he departed with six Navy Achievement Medals as a Chief Petty Officer. From there he went on to work as a Maintenance and Safety Manager at Genie Industries/Terex Corporation before starting at OVERTON Safety Training in 2006. He received honorable mention in Crane Hot Line Magazine’s 2009 Top Trainer of the Year contest after referrals by local MSHA/OSHA and several clients. Rob is an NCCCO Certified Crane Operator and NCCCO Accredited practical examiner for all Mobile, Tower, Overhead and Articulating Boom Cranes. Rob has participated as a member of the NCCCO Articulated Boom Crane and Digger Derrick program development Task Forces and is an active member of the Washington State Crane and Rigging Advisory Committee, AGC and ABC of WA/ID Safety Committee’s and Crane Task Forces. Rob has been a member of ACRP since 2008 and has participated in 3 ACRP Annual General Assembly sessions.
Curt Raber
After working 40 years as an operator and special project manager with a barge and freight company, Curt came to Overton Safety Training. He has been an instructor for OST for 4 years based in the Seattle area. Curt is an NCCCO accredited practical examiner for the Small and Large Telescopic Mobile Cranes and Articulating Cranes.
Cody Fischer
Cody started as an equipment operator in 2002 with forklifts, backhoes, loaders, and various equipment. He operated in the farm and construction industries. In 2007 he joined Overton Safety Training part-time in the office. Just a few months later he switched to full time as a curriculum assistant and administrative assistant. As of 2009 he is a Client Manager and an Instructor.
Mike Upshaw
Mike has been in the crane and rigging industry since 1986. He was a Classified Rigger and a crane operator for 8 years with a construction company. Part of his responsibilities including the training of new operators. Then he spent five years as an operator of various equipment types including tower cranes, forklift, backhoe, front end loader, and skid steer. In 2008 he joined Overton Safety Training as an instructor. Mike is an NCCCO Certified Operator of Mobile, Articulating, Tower, and Overhead Cranes. Mike is an accredited NCCCO Practical examiner for Mobile, Articulating, Tower, and Lattice Cranes.
Tim Fay
Tim has worked in safety for over ten years. He started in the safety department on the equipment rental side of things. He took a small hiatus as a Manager of a U-Haul while working part-time for Overton Safety Training. He was able to join OST full time in 2011.
Richard Hernandez
Richard started working with heavy equipment in the late 1980s. Starting as an operator, after a while he was sent to a “Train-the-Trainer” course and that is when he first started training. From there, he worked for Hyster Papè training operators for forklifts, aerial and scissor lifts, and Bobcats. In 2005 he joined Overton Safety Training as a full time instructor. Richard is an accredited NCCCO Practical examiner for Articulating Cranes.
